JLG Architects receives award for Grand Forks Flight Support design

GRAND FORKS, ND – JLG Architects and GW & Sons Construction, Inc. were recently presented with a 2009 Excellence in Design Award by American Buildings for the design and construction of the Grand Forks Flight Support Facility at the Grand Forks International Airport. The project received the First Place prize in the Transportation Division, beating out projects in both the United States and Canada.

After many years occupying an utilitarian building, GFK Flight Support decided to build a new, state-of-the-art, modern Flight Support Center at Grand Forks International Airport. The facility has many amenities for pilots and for the general public. Airplane services include a 25,500 square foot indoor hangar, airplane maintenance areas, parking, aircraft rental/charter, full line services, and flight training. In addition, the 20,000 square foot indoor Center offers many complementary services, such as flight planning, a pilot’s lounge, an observation deck, office spaces, and an executive conference room. The modern, twenty-first century building possesses many sustainable features, including parking limited to the minimum by local codes, excellent natural lighting and ventilation, and high-efficiency glazing systems.

This is the second design award for the Flight Support Facility. It was honored with an Honor Award by the North Dakota Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in September of 2009.
