By: Press Release, Greater Grand Forks Convention & Visitors Bureau
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Professionals from government, academia, and the food industry will convene at the Alerus Center starting this Monday, July 12.
Attendees will discuss cutting edge research on methods to acquire, evaluate, compile and disseminate composition data on foods available in the United States. One session, “Sodium Under Scrutiny,” addresses reducing sodium in foods as producers seek new ways to keep foods tasty with less salt.
The 2.5-day conference also highlights research conducted in rural America and will kick off with a welcoming address by Gerald F. Combs Jr., director of the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center, part of USDA’s Agricultural Research Service. Following, there will be more than 30 speakers and poster presenters.
Other conference highlights include presentations outlining the development of a vitamin D database for national nutrition monitoring, spectral fingerprinting for authenticating foods and botanical supplements, analytical methods for determining dietary fiber content of foods, and the process used to develop the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. A complete conference schedule can be found on the organization’s website at www.nutrientdataconf.org.
The National Nutrient Databank Conference (NNDC) is a 501(c) nonprofit organization. The NNDC has been held annually since 1976 to provide a venue to promote the responsible use of food composition data to further human health and well-being.
This conference provides a great opportunity for dietitians, researchers, educators, students, practitioners, the media and others to ask questions of scientists and policy makers that create and maintain nutrient databases. It is also an opportunity for those who create food and nutrient composition tools to learn about critical data needs from users themselves.
